CHAPTER♥TWELVE

8 days until Christmas

Leave it alone.

Don’t even go there.

Those were the things Darla had been telling herself ever since Will had backed away from her at Buttoned Up. She hated how things between them would be so good one moment and definitely not so good the next moment. What was he keeping from her?

It had to be something big. She’d never believed his line about how they’d gradually drifted apart. Maybe their communication hadn’t been as good as it should have been. But they’d still loved each other.

Things between them had been good until one day they weren’t. And before she could figure out why Will had put walls up around himself, sealing her out, he’d ended their engagement.

At first she’d told herself that it was the wedding preparations. She had gone a bit overboard with all of the details. She’d wanted to have just the right venue on Bluestar Island. And she wanted twinkle lights—everywhere. And then there were the favors and the dresses and the list went on and on. It had become too big. By the end, even she wasn’t happy. But unlike him, she’d never considered throwing in the towel on their relationship.

As the cold wintery breeze whipped past her, she hunched down in her coat. It was Friday evening, and she was making her way to city hall. Why had she agreed to go Christmas caroling? Oh, yes, it was Aster’s idea.

Darla wanted to back out. She was in absolutely no mood to be singing cheerful holiday songs. But Aster was her best friend, and she refused to let her down. Besides it might do her some good to get out and do something to take her mind off of Will.

As she approached city hall, she noticed a crowd congregating near the big Christmas tree. It was all decked out with multi-colored twinkle lights. This particular tree had been decorated every year for her entire life. Traditions ran deep in Bluestar. It was one of the things she loved most about the town. It was reliable and consistent. Not much changed in Bluestar.

She searched through the sea of faces until she spotted Aster, the mastermind behind bringing caroling back to the town. And by the large turnout, it appeared Aster’s idea was well received. Darla smiled. Her grumpiness washed away. Maybe this wasn’t such a bad idea after all.

She moved toward Aster, who had a clipboard in her hands. “How’s it going?”

Aster beamed. “Great. The caroling had a bigger response than I was expecting. I’m just putting everyone in groups.”

“Where do you want me?”

“Would you mind being in my group? I thought it’d be fun if we could do this together.”

“Does that mean Sam backed out?”

Aster nodded. “He had to fix something on the goat pen. He felt really bad about missing it, and he almost came with me until I assured him you would be here.”

“Let me guess. Dash is up to his old tricks again.”

Aster nodded again. “He certainly keeps life interesting.”

“Well, don’t worry.
